Empress in Thorns formed in Bellingen in NSW in late 1999 around the Hutchings brothers; Boutell was brought in shortly afterwards and followed some time later by Kehlet. Their initial demo was raw but defined the band's objectives well with an atmospheric black metal sound but the subsequent EP release showed Empress in Thorns to have moved into more of a Swedish melodic death metal direction.
The band played at the Bloodlust Festival in 2002 but seems to have subsequently disappeared.
