Melbourne band Contrive plays angry metal with a hardcore edge that isn't that far removed from late-90s Sepultura at times.

Band information

Contrive is a groove metal band formed in 1999 by Paul Haugh and Tim Stahlmann following the disbanding of Fracture. Haug's twin Andrew was immediately added on drums. Soon after forming the group released an EP and appeared at Metal for the Brain. In 2002, Contrive supported Mayhem and Destruction, released a second EP in early 2003 and racked up shows with Sepultura, Soilwork and Machine Head.

Contrive's debut album The Meaning Unseen was issued in September 2005 and saw some melodic metalcore aspects entering their sound. Contrive toured Thailand in 2009 but without Stahlmann, who broke his collarbone while on holidays. Greg Shaw from Truth Corroded replaced him for the tour, which included a date with Parkway Drive in Bangkok. In June the band began work on their second album, eventually heading to Vancouver, Canada to complete mastering and mixing with Devin Townsend. Ahead of the album's release in 2010, the band toured nationally with The Devin Townsend Project and later the same year opened for Opeth. Soon after, The Internal Dialogue was released. Contrive was less active after this point; Stahlmann left the band in 2015 and Contrive's next album was completed after several years of recording in 2017.
