Band information
One of the most amazing and unique bands Australia's extreme music scene has ever produced, diSEMBOWELMENT's legacy has continued to reverberate throughout the worldwide metal scene ever since the appearance of their first and only album in 1993, with echoes being heard in the work of such artists as My Dying Bride, Third and the Mortal and maudlin of the Well. While generally considered to exist within the doom metal genre, diSEMBOWELMENT experimented with a wide variety of musical forms that included passages of insanely brutal grind and vocal ambience back to back with blastbeat intensity and avant garde arrangements and compositions within a broadly metal framework.
The band began as a two piece grind act called Bacteria featuring Gallina and Mazziotta that recorded a demo in 1989.
As diSEMBOWELMENT, the pair recorded an early demo called 'Mourning September' with bass provided by Dean Ruprich of Necrotomy. Jason Kells joined the band shortly after and Gallina and Kells started work on new material for what would become the bands second full demo. In the meantime the band recorded a track for MBR Records Germany Pantalgia - An International Death Metal Compilation which featured bands such as Therion, Rottrevore, Pan-Thy-Monium, God Macabre, Malediction and other international underground acts of the time.
With the release of their now legendary second demo, "Deep Sensory Perception Into Aural Fate", and the combined interested from the MBR Release, the band won themselves a deal with US based Relapse Records. Their first Relapse release was the infamous underground classic 'Dusk' EP with one extra track that featured new permanent bassist Matt Skarajew.
The following year a full-length album emerged that ranks as one of the best metal albums ever produced in Australia. After this, the band decided to split. Gallina and Skarajew continued with Trial of the Bow, a band experimenting with a combination of folk, ambience and Middle Eastern music. Kells went on to form Firebird in the late 90s. Skarajew and Mazziotta were later active in a grind band called Pulgar.
In late 2005, Relapse released all of diSEMBOWELMENT's recorded work as a special edition double CD. In 2010, Mazziotta and Skarajew reconvened under the name d.USK for occasional performances. That band is now known as Inverloch.
