Band information
Melbourne band Contrive's basic sound is an angry groove metal with a hardcore edge but also frequently exhibits aspects of melodic death metal and, more recently, a progressive alterna-metal feel.
Tim Stahlmann and Paul Haug featured in the final version of Fracture and Contrive grew out of that band's demise. Not long after forming the group released an EP and appeared at Metal for the Brain and developed a reputation as a band who would play anywhere with anyone. In 2002, Contrive supported Mayhem and Destruction, released a second EP in early 2003 and racked up shows with Sepultura, Soilwork and Machine Head.
Mixed by Frederick Nordström, Contrive's debut album The Meaning Unseen was issued in September 2005 and saw some melodic death metal aspects entering their sound. Since then the group has continued to appear live regularly. Contrive toured Thailand in 2009 but without Stahlmann, who broke his collarbone while on holidays. Greg Shaw from Truth Corroded replaced him for the tour, which included a date with Parkway Drive in Bangkok. In June the band began work on their second album, eventually heading to Vancouver, Canada to complete mastering and mixing with Devin Townsend. Ahead of the album's release in 2010, the band toured nationally with The Devin Townsend Project and later the same year opened for Opeth.
