Band information

Cog was a highly influential and successful progressive rock and metal band, orginally conceived by former The Hanging Tree members Lucius Borich and Flynn Gower. The pair began writing songs together in 1998 after Borich returned from some time working in the US and recorded initial demos with Borich playing bass. Drafting Luke Gower into the bass position, Cog began a residency at Sydney’s Forest Inn as an instrumental band while seeking a vocalist. Flynn Gower eventually took on the role himself and the trio held another long residency at the Excelsior Hotel. After appearing with System of a Down, the first EP was released in early 2002, followed by the second later in the year. Cog then played the Big Day Out in 2003 and began writing and recording a debut album, The New Normal. In December the band featured at Metal for the Brain.

The New Normal debuted in the ARIA Chart at #19 when released in April 2005, shortly after the band played the Pyramid Rock Festival. Subsequent tours with Shihad and summer festival slots at Homebake and the Big Day Out followed.

Cog’s next album was recorded during 2007 amid domestic and international tours. The album’s first single, “What If” cracked the chart at #21 in November; the album debuted at #2 when released in April 2008. Later in the year they played several festival dates in the UK and re-issued the first two EPs as a double album. Following the release of a DVD in 2010, Cog intimated that they were unlikely to continue as a live band and played their final show in Sydney on 22 December, 2010. Borich joined FLOATINGME shortly afterwards and later formed The Nerve with Ezekial Ox of Mammal and Full Scale.

In February 2016, Cog announced they were reforming for a short east coast tour in July.
