Band Information
Killing Time played melody-laden contemporary heavy metal rock. The band was originally centred around veteran guitarist Jed Starr (the lynchpin with such bands as King's Cross, Massive Appendage and Fester Fanatics) who, while not an original member, quickly gave the band the songwriting edge it needed.
Killing Time rocked with immense power and a high degree of melody, fusing rock and metal with hard funk and a sublime commercial sensibility. When Tubby Wadsworth left the band in 1991 a series of drummers followed, including ex-Cremator member Russell Hopkinson, later of You Am I, before settling down with Syd Green. ‘Ruby’s Mind’ garnered the band intense attention which made them the subject of a bidding war; despite offers from all of the country’s major labels Killing Time signed to Sydney independent Red Eye and issued ‘The Mandelbroth Set’ which was also enormously popular. In the meantime the band toured with an assortment of visitors including Faith No More, Scatterbrain, Mudhoney and Jane's Addiction. 'Ruby's Mind' eventually sold in excess of 10,000 units and appeared in the national Top 10. Starr left the band to reform Fester Fanatics in 1992 and shortly afterwards Chris Collins joined.
Killing Time went to the US to record and album with Pantera producer Terry Date late that year and changed its name to Mantissa to avoid confusion with several other bands of the same name in August 1992.
