Universum was founded by Stephen Murphy, Jaron Soininen and Michael Soininen in Adelaide. The band began rehearsing as a three piece and soon after were joined by Rachael Madden. Rehearsals with various musicians eventually led to the appointment of Liam Brophy on bass in late 2006, and in early 2007 Adam Soininen joined on lead vocals.

During mid-2009 they opened for '''Cradle of Filth''' and have also featured on tours by '''Unearth, Paul Di'anno''' and '''The Black Dahlia Murder'''. During mid-2009 they opened for Cradle of Filth and have also featured on tours by Unearth, Paul Di'anno and The Black Dahlia Murder. Their second album includes guest appearances from members of Nightrage, Soilwork and Scar Symmetry. Ex-Blood Mason member Doug Clark replaced Brophy during 2010.
