Universum was founded by Stephen Murphy, Jaron Soininen and Michael Soininen in Adelaide. The band began rehearsing as a three piece and soon after were joined by Rachael Madden. Bassist Liam Brophy joined in late 2006, and in early 2007 Adam Soininen joined on lead vocals.

Hailing from Adelaide - Australia, '''Universum''' completed formation in early 2007. Fusing Scandinavian melodic death metal, NWOAHM and old school metal elements, Universum have set forth to create their own distinct brand of heavy melodic metal.
''Leto Destinatus'' was released on June 15, 2008 through Riot! '''Tomy Laisto''' from Finnish band '''Mors Principium Est''' guests on one track. The band featured as the national support on the '''DragonForce''' tour that October. During mid-2009 they opened for '''Cradle of Filth''' and have also featured on tours by '''Unearth, Paul Di'anno''' and '''The Black Dahlia Murder'''. Their second album includes guest appearances from members of '''Nightrage, Soilwork''' and '''Scar Symmetry'''. Ex-[[Blood Mason]] member Doug Clark replaced Brophy during 2010.

Founded by Stephen Murphy, Jaron Soininen and Michael Soininen, the band began rehearsing as a three piece and soon after were joined by Rachael Madden. With the challenge ahead to find the two remaining members the group continued to focus time and energy toward producing and rehearsing their original material. Rehearsals with various musicians eventually led to appointment of Liam Brophy on Bass in late 2006, and in early 2007 Adam Soininen was welcomed to the band on lead vocals.

With the lineup complete, Universum emerged on the Adelaide and Australian metal scene with a number 1 track on Triple J Radio’s Unearthed competition metal charts, headlining slots in local metal shows, 2nd place in the state final of the Emergenza battle of the bands competition and regular air play and interview appearances on Adelaide’s 3D Radio’s Powersurge segment.

Current plans, on top of key live performances both locally and nationally, includes the release of their full length debut album 'Leto Destinatus' on June 15, 2008. The album was mixed and mastered in '''Sweden''' by '''Jens Bogren (Soilwork, Opeth, Amon Amarth)''' and the artwork was designed by Gus Sazes (Sonic Syndicate, Nightrage, Firewind). There is also a guest lead on the track 'Ignite the Subconscious' by Tomy Laisto from Finland's melodic metal force Mors Principium Est.

Brandishing a hard work ethic and a strong determination to bring their musical vision to metal fans throughout Australia and the world, Universum are developing as one of Australia’s up and coming metal talents.
