Killing Time played melody-laden contemporary heavy metal rock. The band was originally centred around veteran guitarist Jed Starr (the lynchpin with such bands as [[Kings Cross]], [[Massive Appendage]] and [[Fester Fanatics]]) who, while not an original member, quickly gave the band the songwriting edge it needed.  
Killing Time formed in Melbourne in 1989 as a '''Stooges'''-style band. Tubby Wadsworth and his former bandmate Jed Starr both joined in 1990 and the band began playing a funk-edged heavy metal style. By 1991 they had signed to Red Eye and released ''Ruby's Mind'' soon after. Syd Green replaced Wadsworth at the end of 1991 after a short time with Russell Hopkinson on drums. Killing Time rocked with immense power and a high degree of melody, fusing rock and metal with hard funk and a sublime commercial sensibility. When Tubby Wadsworth left the band in 1991 a series of drummers followed, including ex-[[Cremator]] member Russell Hopkinson, later of '''You Am I''', before settling down with Syd Green. ‘Ruby’s Mind’ garnered the band intense attention which made them the subject of a bidding war; despite offers from all of the country’s major labels Killing Time signed to Sydney independent Red Eye and issued ‘The Mandelbroth Set’ which was also enormously popular.
