Band Information
Ne Obliviscaris is a Melbourne progressive metal band, formed in 2003 by Xenoyr and Adam Cooper. An early line-up featured Sheri-Jesse Tantawy (later of Black Like Vengeance), Corey King, Corey Baker and Adam Boddy, but by the time of their first live show in 2006 only Xenoyr and King remained. Tim Charles, Matt Klavins and Brendan Brown all joined the group in 2004 and drummer Dan Presland arrived in 2005. The band was mooted for Festival of the Dead in 2006 but were pulled due to time constraints and played at Metal for the Brain instead. A demo was released in early 2007 and in March the band supported Suffocation in Melbourne.
King departed in 2007 and French musician Benjamin Baret replaced him but was unable to gain visas to enter or work in the country for almost a year, finally joining Ne O in May of 2008. The band conducted a national tour in April and May 2009. They were added to the line-up of the Against the Grain Against the Grain Festival in early September but were forced by withdraw when Baret again faced visa problems and couldn't enter the country. Ne Obliviscaris began recording an album in late October 2009. Benjamin Baret's visa was finally granted in October 2011 and Nelson Barnes from The Schoenberg Automaton joined on drums in March 2012, replacing Presland. The band's long-delayed album Portal Of I was issued shortly after and the band toured the east coast to support the release.
Presland rejoined Ne Obliviscaris in August 2012 and early the next year, the band was signed by Season of Mist and study of one of the album's tracks was included in a course at the NSW Conservatorium of Music. In August Ne Obliviscaris toured South East Asia before returning to support The Devin Townsend Project in Melbourne and to headline the Sonic Forge Festival for the third time in November. The year was rounded off with opening slots on Enslaved's tour and a national support to Sirenia.
Citadel was released in November 2014 and just missed an ARIA Top 40 entry. During the same year, the band raised more than $80,000 through a crowd funding campaign that allowed them to do a world tour in 2015, supporting Fleshgod Apocalypse in Asia, Cradle of Filth in the UK and playing shows in India, the US and throughout Europe. Australian shows closed the year out. In January 2017, Ben Brown was fired from Ne Obliviscaris after allegations of domestic abuse against him; the subsequent album was recorded with Robin Zielhorst (Cynic) on bass. Urn was released in October 2017, with Martino Garattoni of Italian band Ancient Bards replacing Brown.
Further work from the band has been hampered by COVID. A fourth album was announced in late 2019 but pandemic restrictions have pushed back the release date to 2022. Dan Presland announced his departure from Ne Obliviscaris in early 2022.
Ne Obliviscaris has released several EPs and stand alone tracks exclusively to subscribers of their Patreon platform, which they established in 2016.
