Five Star Prison Cell is a Melbourne band that was put together by ex-Frankenbok vocalist Adam Glynn with Holain and Macdonald of Extra Virgin and soon after joined by Whitworth of Tension. FSPC is an avant-garde technical metal maelstrom that is hard to place within any genre, comparisons have been made with Mr. Bungle and the Dillinger Escape Plan. The band was conceived as a one-off recording project but when Extra Virgin came to an end it was decided to continue FSPC as a full time endeavor.

Their debut album, appropriately titled The Complete First Season was a culmination of their first nine months together and what initially started out as an EP, went on to become a full length album after signing to Faultline Records under advisement of their then-producer dw Norton. Soon after the release Five Star started touring regularly around Australia earning a support slot for Arch Enemy and Spiderbait along with sharing the stage with some of Australia's best-known metal bands.

FSPC’s second album Slaves of Virgo again produced by dw Norton was slated for release in late 2006 but was delayed until early March 2007. Slaves of Virgo was considered a darker and more brutal approach to their left of center writing style and before the release the song "Army of the Vigilant" won the band the 2006 Musicoz Awards in the Metal/Hardcore category. After the release Five Star stepped up their touring schedule and along with their own headlining shows around Australia and their first trip to New Zealand, they also had the opportunity to tour with The Dillinger Escape Plan, Cephalic Carnage, The Black Dahlia Murder and Danzig along with putting in an appearance at many festivals including Overcranked, Metalstock and Against the Grain.

In late 2007 FSPC sadly left their label Faultline Records due to a difference in expectations, and despite comments to the contrary there was no ill will on the part of the band after their departure, nor was there any contractual obligations to the label.

In 2009 the band opted for less touring in favor of writing a new album, and although a more quiet year they still managed to their second New Zealand tour along with keeping up appearances in capital cities and regional towns throughout Australia. They were also nominated for the first Australian Metal Awards in the 'Best Live Band' and 'Best Film Clip' categories as well performing at the ceremony.

The band began recording their third album Matriarch in March 2010 with producer Forrester Savell ahead of a release through Riot! in May.

Slaves of Virgo and The Complete First Season will be re-released in 2010.
