Psychrist was a powerful, black-tinged death metal maelstrom, blasting the winds of hate from out of Canberra since the early 1990s. With James Simper on drums and Eddie Telfor on second guitar a new Psychrist line-up supported Pungent Stench. Telfor was shortly replaced by Matt Keele and Psychrist recorded The Abysmal Fiend. After this Kel Dulihanty joined as vocalist.

Embrace Rapture in Disgust was recorded in 1996 but personnel issues and problems with the artwork (that was eventually used on a Grenade 7” release) delayed release. After 1997's Metal for the Brain appearance Keele, Dulihanty and Simper split from the band, while Yuri Ward joined Armoured Angel as guitarist and singer.
