Band Information
Nazxul is a black metal band from Sydney. Originally a studio project for several years, a demo was in 1994 issued before the appearance of the Totem album which featured Lachlan Mitchell, Adrian Henderson, Greg Morelli from Grungeon, Steve Hughes from Slaughter Lord and Dalibor Backovic on bass and vocals. The band played their first ever gigs in 1998. By now Rev. Kriss Hades from Sadistik Exekution had joined on guitar and Morte from Bestianity was the band's vocalist, with Henderson taking over the bass role. Hughes left the band after these shows and in early 1999 was replaced by Front End Loader drummer Pete Kostic.
In mid-1999 the "Black Seed" EP was re-released by Chatterbox with extra tracks. Morte was sacked from the band following a national tour with Impaled Nazarene and Backovic rejoined, his first ever live appearance with them being the 1999 Metal for the Brain festival, a performance released on picture vinyl in 2002. Shortly after this the individual members of Nazxul went their separate ways for some time. Kostic joined Regurgitator and was also with the Hard Ons until 2011. Mitchell joined Brace with several former members of Henry's Anger. Hades has released solo material.
The band reformed and was to support Dimmu Borgir in early 2004 but the tour was cancelled. Several months later Nazxul toured nationally with Virgin Black. The touring line-up featured Mitchell, Henderson and Morelli plus Luke Mills and Daniel Lomas from Secratain and Tim Yatras from Battalion. After several more years since of silence, Nazxul was announced as the major support on Mayhem's 2008 Australian tour, but that tour was also cancelled. During that year, the group completed work on the long-promised Iconoclast album and began making tentative plans for live shows. Tragically however, Greg Morelli was killed shortly after midnight on November 20, 2008 when his motorcycle hit a flooded stretch of road in Sydney. His place in the band was taken by Pete Peric (Infernal Method, Rookwood) and Yatras was replaced by John "Yonn" McLaughlin from Damarill and Backyard Mortuary.
Iconoclast was released in 2009 and the band played a single return show in Sydney in September before heading to Europe for performances in Britain, Belgium and Russia. In late May 2010, Nazxul toured the US. Following this tour the band played a show in Sydney but after that became inactive for over a decade, returning with a new album in 2021.
